We pulled real Google search-volume and advertiser cost-per-click data for 32 home-service categories in Bristol — everything from drain unblocking to solar panels — to see what the numbers actually show about local demand. Two different rankings tell two different stories.

By cost-per-click — what local businesses pay Google per visitor, a rough proxy for how valuable (and often how urgent) that job is.
| Rank | Category | CPC |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Locksmith | £33.89 |
| 2 | Double glazing | £33.43 |
| 3 | Loft conversion | £32.44 |
| 4 | Stairlift | £27.70 |
| 5 | Emergency plumber | £24.44 |
| 6 | Solar panel installation | £23.65 |
| 7 | Drain unblocking | £21.70 |
| 8 | Boiler replacement | £18.30 |
| 9 | Fitted wardrobes | £15.16 |
| 10 | Kitchen fitters | £14.59 |
The two lists barely overlap, and that's the actual finding. High search volume (skip hire, electrician, pest control) tends to mean broad, routine household demand — useful but not especially valuable to advertisers. High cost-per-click (locksmith, double glazing, loft conversion, stairlifts) tends to mean urgent, high-value, or infrequent jobs — the kind where a business will pay a lot for one converting click because the job itself is worth thousands, or the customer is locked out right now and not price-shopping. Drain unblocking is the one category that shows up meaningfully on both lists — reasonably searched-for and reasonably valuable per click, which is part of why it was the first category this site built out.
Google Ads keyword planner data (via DataForSEO's API), pulled for Bristol-specific search terms across several dates in September 2026. Search volume is Google's own monthly average; CPC is the average cost-per-click advertisers currently pay to appear for that term. This isn't survey data or an estimate — it's the same data Google shows advertisers deciding whether to bid on these terms.

Full methodology: real DataForSEO pulls across multiple research cycles, 2026-09-04 to 2026-09-05 (see the repo's data/keyword-pulls/ directory for raw source files). Bristol only — other cities weren't part of this particular pull. Figures are Google Ads averages, not survey or transaction data, and will fluctuate month to month.
